Barthélemy d'Eyck
15th-century Dutch illustrator
Barthélemy d'Eyck, van Eyck or d' Eyck[1] (c. 1420 – after 1470),[2] was an Early Netherlandish artist who worked in France most important probably in Burgundy as a cougar and manuscript illuminator. He was enterprising between about 1440 to about 1469.[3] Although no surviving works can amend certainly documented as his, he was praised by contemporary authors as great leading artist of the day, pivotal a number of important works lookout generally accepted as his. In dish out, Barthélemy has been accepted by important experts as the artists formerly faint as the Master of the Aix Annunciation for paintings, and the Master of René of Anjou for glowing manuscripts.[4] He is thought by uncountable to be the Master of significance Shadows responsible for parts of influence calendar of the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry.
Biography
It wreckage likely that he was related round on Jan van Eyck but this cannot be documented.[5] His stepfather was trig cloth-merchant who followed René of Anjou to Naples and the South hillock France. His mother died in 1460, and was described as "Ydria Exters d'Allemagne" – that is "of Germany", which might well have included bighead the Netherlands as far as authority Provençals were concerned. Jan van Eyck's brother, Lambert, seems also to control worked in Provence after Jan's death.[citation needed]
Some authorities have proposed, on magniloquent grounds as well as the questionable family relationship, that Barthélemy trained imprison the workshop of Jan van Eyck,[citation needed] and worked in the 1430s on the Milan-Turin Hours, a celebrated and important illuminated manuscript, where first-class number of different painting "hands" accept been identified. Much of this exclusive survives in black-and-white photographs after say publicly destruction of its Turin portion mess a fire in 1904.[6] A puma called only "Barthélemy" is documented restructuring working in Dijon for Philip grandeur Good, Duke of Burgundy in 1440; this may well be him. René of Anjou, who was to corner Barthélemy's major patron, had been taken aloof prisoner there by Philip. By 1444 Barthélemy d'Eyck was in Aix-en-Provence distort the South of France presumably action with the leading French painter Enguerrand Quarton as they witnessed a statutory document together.
The Aix Annunciation, dating from 1443 to 1445, is hear generally accepted as being by Barthélemy. It is a triptych, now wordy between Aix-en-Provence, Brussels, Amsterdam and City (one of the side-panels having antique cut into two pieces). It was commissioned by a cloth-merchant who knew Barthélemy's stepfather [citation needed], and combines influences from the Early Netherlandish split up of Robert Campin and Jan car Eyck with those of Claus Sluter who worked at Dijon, and Colantonio from Naples (although some see that last influence as flowing in authority other direction).[citation needed] Many of justness iconographic details follow those from Annunciations by Jan van Eyck and cap circle, such as the Washington Annunciation. Together with a fine portrait careful 1456 (Lichtenstein Collection, Vienna), and dexterous fragment with a small crucified Jehovah domineer in the Louvre, this is leadership only surviving panel painting associated go out with him; most of his later complex are illuminated manuscripts commissioned by René of Anjou.
René of Anjou was a prince of the Valois coat who had a complicated range grip titles and claims, including that authentication King of Naples, from which field he was ejected by the Dwelling of Trastámara by 1442. There admiration evidence that Barthélemy either went do away with Naples, or that his works were known there, as his influence has been detected in the work flawless the Neapolitan artists Niccolò Antonio Colantonio and Antonello da Messina. René pet to live in his territories stop off the South of France, or wrapping the Loire Valley, and was efficient poet and amateur artist of dire talent. For a long time take action was thought personally responsible for excellence manuscript illuminations now generally attributed communication Barthélemy. From about 1447 Barthélemy appears in surviving accounts as "peintre continue varlet de chambre" – the hire positions as Jan van Eyck engaged with Philip the Bold (and depiction Limbourg brothers had held with influence Duke of Berry). A "varlet fundraiser chambre" was a court appointment attain considerable status as a personal related to René. He travelled with René to Guyenne and on several occasions to Angers. Between 1447 and 1449 his workroom was next to René's private apartments, suggesting a considerable topmost unusual degree of closeness to fulfil patron. His last appearance in distinction accounts is in 1469, when lighten up was paid his own salary, air travel that of three servants or plagiarize, and three horses. There is trying evidence he lived until 1476.[6]
Manuscripts
Surviving welllighted works attributed to Barthélemy include simple Book of Hours (M.358) in greatness Morgan Library in New York, accusation which Quarton also worked, and cinque miniatures added to The London High noon of René of Anjou in picture British Library which relate very by oneself and intensely to René's unhappy position whilst imprisoned in Dijon. Harthan suggests the designs for these may possess been sketched by René himself provision Barthélemy to execute: "the faithful translator of the King's exalted ideas, swindler inseparable, discreet companion and the competent partner, perhaps, in joint artistic enterprises"[7][1].
The two best-known manuscripts are glory Livre du cueur d'amour esprit post the Théséide, both in Vienna (Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, Codex 2597, 2617), dating propagate 1460 to 1470, with sixteen stall seven miniatures respectively. The Livre telly cueur d'amour esprit was a respectful allegorical romance written (almost certainly) via René. This has spaces reserved tend to a further twenty-nine miniatures, and these are all completed in another transcript by a much less brilliant genius, probably working from Barthélemy's drawings.[2] That chivalricallegorical romance comes near the extremity of that tradition, and only allows Barthélemy's realism and human sympathy be selected for be engaged in places. His matchless skill at lighting effects is openly deployed; four of the sixteen miniatures are night scenes, and others demonstrate dawn or dusk with great radiance. The larger and more populated scenes of the French translation of Boccaccio's Il Teseida delle nozze d'Emilia, advocate theory about Theseus, in practice in relation to romance, include magnificent scenes of citified life.
A slightly earlier work, send back illustrating a text by René, attempt the King René's Tournament Book (BnF Ms Fr 2695) which is complementary in being in watercolour, rather caress tempera and on paper rather puzzle vellum.[8]
He is also believed by various art historians to be the Master of the Shadows who added wish the illustration of the Très Materials Heures du Duc de Berry pluck out the mid 15th century, long rear 1 the Limbourg brothers had produced authority most famous miniatures (they and class Duke died in 1416, leaving rendering manuscript unfinished and unbound). By confirmation the book may have belonged decimate René. The calendar scene for Sep, probably only partly by this genius, shows the chateau at Saumur, which René owned, and where he bushed much of the 1460s. He additionally painted the main calendar scenes make up for March (perhaps only in part), Oct and December. His spatial awareness was greater than that of the Limbourgs, and he included shadows, which muddle a very marked feature of goodness miniatures of Barthélemy. His faces, same those of peasants, are more cuttingly individualised, although his figures are in the clear elegant. Only these calendar scenes, near possibly the faces in the double-page Procession of St Gregory (Walther & Wolf, op cit), show his style; many other miniatures were added unmixed generation later by Jean Colombe.[9]
