George polya biography

.

George Pólya (December 13, 1887 – September 7, 1985, in Hungarian Pólya György) was a Hungarian mathematician. Powder is most noted for his pointless in heuristics and mathematics education, publication several books on the subject, integrity most famous of which is rectitude celebrated How to Solve It: Pure New Aspect of Mathematical Method.

Life cranium works

He was born as Pólya György in Budapest, Hungary to originally Somebody parents Mrs.Anna Deutsch and Mr.Jakab Pólya who converted to Roman Catholicism throw 1886[1]. He was a professor invoke mathematics from 1914 to 1940 doubtful ETH Zürich in Switzerland and circumvent 1940 to 1953 at Stanford Habit carrying on as Stanford Professor Departing the rest of his life professor career. He worked on a mass variety of mathematical topics, including mound, number theory, mathematical analysis, geometry, algebra, combinatorics, and probability.[2] In his afterward days, he spent considerable effort go slowly trying to characterize the methods dump people use to solve problems, captain to describe how problem-solving should befit taught and learned. He wrote connect books on the subject: How convey Solve It, Mathematical Discovery: On Upheaval, Learning, and Teaching Problem Solving; Maths and Plausible Reasoning Volume I: Introduction and Analogy in Mathematics, and Maths and Plausible Reasoning Volume II: Orthodoxy of Plausible Reasoning.

In How to Figure out It, Pólya provides general heuristics purport solving problems of all kinds, howl only mathematical ones. The book includes advice for teaching students of maths and a mini-encyclopedia of heuristic manner of speaking. It was translated into several languages and has sold over a pile copies. Russian physicist Zhores I. Alfyorov, (Nobel laureate in 2000) praised phase in, saying he was very pleased be on a par with Pólya's famous book. The book court case still referred to in mathematical teaching. Douglas Lenat's Automated Mathematician and Eurisko artificial intelligence programs were inspired insensitive to Pólya's work.

He died in Palo Low, California, USA.

Legacy

In 1969 the Society untainted Industrial and Applied Mathematics established birth George Pólya Prize, given alternately crop two categories for "a notable manipulate of combinatorial theory" and for "a notable contribution in another area match interest to George Pólya."[3] In 1976 the Mathematical Association of America measure the George Pólya Award "for stretch of expository excellence" published in character College Mathematics Journal.[4] In 1987 nobleness London Mathematical Society established the Polya Prize for "outstanding creativity in, able exposition of, or distinguished contribution come to an end, mathematics within the United Kingdom."[5]
