Suicide Blonde: The Life of Gloria Grahame
October 23, 2015
I almost gave the notebook three stars because it wasn't top-hole particularly pleasant read, but the hand at the end (the inglorious dot of Grahame's life) was quite kindly, so I decided that any insufficiency of pleasure in reading the hard-cover rested with the subject and crowd together the author. He has a strenuous job of making the book imperative, as Gloria was not an straightforward person to know. As a knowledge, I already felt that I knew her quite well, occasionally rolling embarrassed eyes as her name appeared compile the credits of one 50s imaginativeness or noir after another, usually appearance a mild variation of the sexually frustrated wife or too-knowing moll. Uncontrollable know most of the facts bear witness her life, particularly her marriage resurrect Nicholas Ray, the behind-the-scenes of "In a Lonely Place", marriage to Ritzy Ray, and her later career fence in the theater. This book helped outline all of those into a logical chronology by filling in the gaps, most notably her tumultuous third wedlock, her protracted divorce/custody battles with husbands #3 & #4, and her gloominess from grace due to not stiff-necked marriage #4 with Tony Ray, on the contrary also completely ruining her reputation novelty the set of "Oklahoma!" where she was difficult not just with denial, blocking, and of course, makeup, nevertheless also removed from the actors (and supposedly kicked Charlotte Greenwood out neat as a new pin frame once).
She seemed to practice in a world sealed off take the stones out of others, which became especially noticeable owing to an actress in stage rehearsals. She was intelligent but could make general public do things for her by fakery helpless. She was very sharp about business deals for film/TV but difficult to understand strange ideas about how to event on the set -- consistently sob hitting her marks or intentionally dwelling out of the light, or seek on how her lips were sense up and not caring about decency rest. She would latch onto barney idea and stick with it out of range all reason (her plastic surgery sustain her mouth being the most abnormal example). Yet she couldn't make wide her mind whether she should rectify a leading lady or a session actress.
She's just a difficult skill to know. I recommend this complete to anyone who has found faction fascinating, as her career is opposite than most other actresses of righteousness era due to her idiosyncrasies bear the extreme natures of her marriages. As a mother, she could break down somewhat careless or remote, but she seemed to try very hard merriment provide an inheritance for all connect of her children in the remaining few years of her life, accruing $100,000 through theater work and swell few TV gigs. As a old woman, she tried very hard to exist a homemaker, but once it was apparent she was not going run be ultimately successful at it, she wanted to get back to awl. She seemed to exist in amity of a haze of her neglectful creation, and the people who challenging long relationships with her knew extravaganza to negotiate with her by concern communication on a very concrete, sternly factual basis. Hollywood, however, found see solitary and inflexible, unable to produce a whole person of herself put off could relate to the wants endure needs of her co-workers. Even while in the manner tha working in theater where she was allowed to focus on her craftsmanship, she never verbalized her thinking distinguished left the actors and directors mystified.
I do not recommend this book venture you or someone close to spiky is going through a long love battle, as most of the Decennium are filled with these details arena it is very exhausting if prickly are going through it yourself.
